Sustainability Plan Update: 16 July

At the Board of Governors' meeting yesterday, it was agreed that we needed more time to complete the Feasibility Study, to enable further consideration of the key issues through discussions with staff and trades unions.

Maximising student recruitment potential remains a priority and it has been agreed to enrol an undergraduate intake at Oakwood Park in 2009.  This will enable further work on the University's academic portfolio and provide full engagement with staff in developing opportunities for growth.

In parallel, priority will be given to evaluating development opportunities for our new campus in Kent.  The Board also approved the proposal to appoint a project manager to support the sustainability plan.

I also wanted colleagues to know about the work that has been done over the last few weeks in preparing the preliminary report discussed at the Board of Governor’s meeting.

The report highlights the main issues, concerns and risks that need to be addressed in moving academic provision to other campuses. Meetings between the Executive Dean (Kent) and Directors of Study have informed initial proposals for an academic portfolio.

We had a very constructive meeting with the trades unions to review the Feasibility Plan and there was general feedback that the report had identified the concerns identified by staff. These concerns included: the implications of an elongated timescale to realise our vision for a new campus in Kent; the need to undertake further analysis of the student numbers; the market viability of the academic portfolio; and other options such as the leasing of interim alternative accommodation.

We have advertised for the remaining posts of Dean in the national press this week and will publish a statement on the role of Deans and Directors of Study within the new academic structure in advance of next academic year

Colleagues in Maidstone may also be interested to know that HR Business Partners will be holding informal sessions for all staff, in the Boardroom at Maidstone, throughout July and August.

I am committed to communicating with the staff and students affected by our proposals and will continue to hold regular meetings where appropriate.

It is your knowledge, experience, profile and reputation which underpin our objective to be the leading university for the creative arts. So once again, thank you for all your hard work and commitment throughout this process.

This will be the last in our fortnightly series of communications leading up to yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Governors. However, we will continue to update staff as this process develops over the next few months and I would be grateful if colleagues would continue to raise any issues or concerns through the ‘Ask Exec’ channel.

Please contact us if have any questions, concerns or comments.
